Remember learning to ride a bike? Those first few wobbly attempts when you hadn’t yet developed muscle memory?

Now imagine, instead of a bicycle, you were learning to operate a patient lift in someone’s home, with a real person depending on you. For new Direct Support Professionals, that first ‘ride’ can be intimidating and potentially dangerous for both the employee and the client.

Addressing this type of new hire risk is critical for organizations like Emmaus. Here’s how Emmaus Homes, an MEM policyholder providing in-home disability support services, developed a creative solution to the challenge.

The high cost of learning on the job

The numbers paint a clear picture: 35% of workplace injuries involve employees in their first year on the job. This risk is even higher for organizations like Emmaus whose employees must learn to use specialized equipment in different home environments.

According to Sheila Schmidt, Safety and Risk Services Regional Manager at MEM, this trend persists for two reasons. “One is math,” she explained. “We have so much turnover and movement across so many industries that we’re just seeing more and more new hires than we have in the past. Also, we’re pushing those new hires out faster. They’re usually filling vacant spots, and we need them to hit the ground running.”

Without structured onboarding and training, new employees often have to figure things out as they go. However, safety procedures aren’t always common sense, and this approach can lead to serious, preventable injuries.

📍 Want to learn more about reducing the risk of new hire injuries with strategic onboarding? Listen to our podcast episode, New Hire Onboarding: Setting New Employees Up for Success.

The challenge: Creating consistency in variable environments

At Emmaus, leadership noticed a pattern: More than half of their workplace injuries involved new hires. More experienced team members trained new employees on the job, but this approach wasn’t consistent enough.

Providing support to clients in their homes creates a unique training challenge. Employees must navigate many different variables. Home layouts. Types of equipment. Unique client needs. Without being fully prepared for these varying environments, staff members were experiencing strains, sprains, and falls

Emmaus recognized an opportunity to standardize training and improve their employee safety program – starting with these questions:

  • What if new employees could practice in a risk-free environment?
  • What if they could get comfortable with a variety of types of equipment before working with clients?

The answer, of course, was to give employees more hands-on training. Accomplishing this goal was easier said than done; it required a creative vision.

The solution: A realistic training environment

To turn their idea into reality, Emmaus developed a simulation lab that replicates their clients’ home environments. The adaptive equipment training lab includes:

  • Actual lifts like those used in clients’ homes
  • Real mobility equipment and assistive devices
  • A realistic home layout with typical spacing constraints
  • Common household furniture arrangements

The lab allows Direct Support Professionals to practice using equipment in a controlled setting that closely mimics what they’ll encounter on the job.

Andrew Grosch, Senior Safety and Risk Consultant at MEM, worked with Emmaus throughout the lab’s implementation.

“What stood out to me was the policyholder’s creativity,” recalled Grosch. “They didn’t wait for a solution; they created one. This adaptive equipment lab is a great way to provide new hires with thorough, systematic training.”

Emmaus built the lab out gradually over a few years as resources allowed. This phased approach made the project financially feasible while addressing their immediate safety needs. An MEM safety grant helped fund the lab, which became fully operational near the end of 2024. Going forward, the organization can add equipment as new needs arise.

“This training lab has really been a game changer,” reflected Tisha Greco, who oversees the safety grant application process. “Even in our safety world, work comp world, it never crossed any of our minds that this would be a great idea… We were thrilled when this application came in.”

Emmaus team members train and practice skills in a simulation environment that replicates patient homes.

Practice makes prepared: Expected impact on injuries and claims

Starting in August 2025, each new hire at Emmaus will complete training in the lab before working independently with clients. They’ll also bring existing staff to the lab for refresher training.

While it will take time to gauge the lab’s long-term impact on injuries or work comp claims, the organization believes it will lead to several improvements:

  • Reduction in frequency and severity of injuries
  • Improved confidence and preparedness for new employees

Emmaus’s consistent training program in the lab means everyone gets the same quality of training regardless of who conducts it, eliminating the variability that previously contributed to safety concerns.

“It will take years to see the full impact of this change, but we’re excited to see the results,” noted Grosch. “Learning in a real-world environment helps employees be better prepared for the job. Consequently, we’re already seeing a reduction in injury severity.”

Emmaus team members sit in red chairs in a classroom at The Learning Lab at Emmaus.

Lessons learned and looking to the future

The training lab has implications beyond Emmaus: Soon, they will begin sharing their success by letting others in the community use the facility.

“This is the kind of innovation I want to share with other clients. It’s rooted in real-world safety needs,” remarked Grosch, who said he would recommend this type of training lab to similar policyholders.

At MEM, we’re proud to provide free safety education resources. We’re also grateful for the things we learn from our policyholders. We learned a few valuable lessons from Emmaus’s project:

  1. Grassroots safety initiatives work. Some of the best safety solutions come from the people doing the work. As an insurance company, we can provide support and resources (like the safety grant that helped fund this project), but the Emmaus team was uniquely able to tailor the idea to their needs.
  1. Hands-on training beats theory. Practice in a realistic environment prepares employees in a way that classroom or online instruction simply can’t.
  1. Phased implementation makes big ideas possible. By building the lab over time, Emmaus made an ambitious project manageable.
  1. Prevention pays off. The upfront cost of building a training lab will be offset by a reduction in work comp claims and higher employee retention.

When it comes to preparing healthcare workers for the physical demands of their jobs, Emmaus has shown that creating a realistic practice environment can make a big difference, in terms of both employee safety and quality of care.

Participants celebrate the opening of The Learning Lab at Emmaus.

MEM Safety Grant Program

MEM policyholders are eligible for a safety grant, regardless of premium size or claims history. Successful applicants earn one-to-one matching grants of up to $10,000 toward approved safety initiatives. Policyholders are required to monitor claims data and report on the grant’s success so MEM can help other businesses learn from their experience.

“MEM believed in our vision of the training lab from the very beginning,” recalled Stacy Spradling, Chief HR Officer at Emmaus. “To see it go from idea, to being built, to being used for employee training has been incredible. We truly appreciate MEM’s support, through both the safety grant and the ongoing safety consultation that Andrew provides.”

On this episode of the WorkSAFE Podcast, we sit down with Tisha Greco, MEM’s Resource and Support Center Manager. We discuss MEM’s Safety Grant program, and how it not only impacts a business’s bottom line but also makes a workplace safer for everyone.

Every business faces safety challenges. For some companies, addressing those challenges can become difficult or cumbersome. The cost could potentially grow too high for them to afford. MEM offers an opportunity to help offset those costs and tackle safety challenges head-on.

Listen to this episode of the WorkSAFE Podcast, or read the show notes below.

What is the Safety Grant program?

The MEM Safety Grant program started in August 2016. A Safety Grant provides a one-to-one matching investment in a safety initiative, doubling a company’s investment. In the nearly nine years since its inception, more than 400 grants have been awarded to different businesses.

“We’ve given away over $3 million so far, and we’ve impacted over 13,000 employees, specifically where these different safety initiatives have been implemented,” Greco shared. “We’re really proud of this program and the success that we’ve seen. Our grant recipients typically have seen anywhere from 96% to 100% reduction and claims count and claims cost in the areas where they’ve they’ve implemented these safety solutions.”

Safety Grant program available in multiple states

At the program’s outset, Safety Grants were only available in Missouri. But in 2025, the program expands. “As of January 1st this year, we’re able to offer this program in states outside of Missouri,” Greco added. “Now, we’re able to offer it in Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, and Tennessee.” Increasing the program’s reach allows more employees to benefit from safety solutions.

Applying for a Safety Grant

All MEM policyholders are eligible to apply for the Safety Grant program as long as they hold a current policy and are in good standing financially. Any type of business can apply, regardless of size or premium. Further, employers don’t have to have experienced a claim to apply.

“Every single policyholder is eligible for up to a $10,000 grant every year,” Greco explained. “We do a one-to-one match. So if it’s a $20,000 piece of equipment, the business is going to invest $10,000, MEM is going to invest $10,000. If it’s a $40,000 piece of equipment, the business is going to invest $30,000, MEM’s going to invest $10,000, and so on.”

Eligibility for more than one grant

With a total award maximum of $10,000, businesses can apply for more than one grant if they haven’t reached that threshold. For example, if a company receives a $2,000 grant award toward a $4,000 piece of equipment, they haven’t reached their award maximum. An additional $8,000 in grant money remains.

“That is not something that we always did. That’s a change we made probably about three years ago,” Greco added. “It used to be just one grant per year and now we do $10,000 per year.”

The ideal Safety Grant program applicant

The Safety Grant program is most helpful to businesses that have a vision for specific safety improvements. “The best applicants have a known risk to their employees where a product or a process could be implemented to either eliminate completely or greatly reduce that known hazard,” Greco specified.

She highlights that Safety Grants weren’t designed for wish list items or things employers simply want to test or try. After submitting an application, a Safety and Risk Service professional will come out to provide a consultation. This helps narrow down where true risk and safety priorities lie in a business. “We ideally are not looking for what I like to call ‘nice to have’ items,” she added. “We’re looking for things that are really going to have an impact on the employee’s exposure to risks.”

Claims increase the likelihood of being awarded a grant

Business owners don’t have to have experienced a claim to apply for a grant. Creating a safer workplace is an important effort, with or without a claim. However, trying to improve safety in response to a workplace incident highlights the good a grant can do.

“If somebody has had a claim where they’re trying to increase safety, that’s really going to increase the likelihood of being awarded a grant,” Greco said. “It’s very rare when there are related claims that a grant doesn’t get approved.”

Other ways to stand out during the grant process

When grant applications are submitted, a Safety Grant Review Committee goes over each one. Diverse perspectives from different safety professionals ensure that each applicant gets plenty of consideration.

“Something important to understand is that because we don’t take the business size or the premium size into account, these applications are reviewed completely anonymously,” she shared. Other than what’s on the application, the review committee doesn’t have any other information. “So making a good case for yourself, painting a clear picture as best you can, that really increases your odds of receiving the grant.”

Over shoulder view of unrecognizable inspector wearing ear protectors standing at spacious production department of modern plant and taking picture on smartphone while carrying out inspection.

It’s essential to clarify the specific issues an applicant is facing. “Sometimes we get applications in and it’s hard for the committee to really kind of understand what the safety concern truly is,” Greco shared. Applicants who stand out during the process often:

  • Include photos or videos. Demonstrating the issue or showing the work environment takes the review committee right into your workplace with you.
  • Explain frequency. How often are employees exposed to a particular hazard? Daily exposure is going to score higher than a riskier task completed once or twice a year.
  • Show how a risk can be eliminated. In some workplaces, not every single hazard can be eliminated. Completely getting rid of a risk exposure, even if it’s just one area, garners a higher score
  • Focus their efforts on employees. Some grant applications want to make improvements just for clients or customers. These applications often don’t even make it to the review committee for consideration. Safety Grants are designed to focus on employee safety.

Timing your purchase

It’s important to remember that grants can’t be used for a reimbursement, or towards something that’s already been purchased. Anything a grant is used for can only be purchased after the grant is awarded. “That always hurts my heart a little bit, when I have to tell people they can’t apply for that reason – because they already bought it,” Greco added.

Safety Grant recipients are always innovating

Over the years, Safety Grant recipients have started to innovate the way they invest in safety. One home healthcare company invested their grant into creating a unique training lab. Before, the business trained employees right in client homes. As a result, employees weren’t trained very well, learned inconsistently, and couldn’t refresh their training.

The Safety Grant program allowed them to create a long-lasting safety solution. “This training lab has really been a game changer. This type of thing, it’s something that I think, even in our safety world, work comp world, it never crossed any of our minds that that would be a great idea,” she gushed. “So seeing a policyholder come up with this idea, we were thrilled when this application came in.”

The Safety Grant network

New technologies come out every day. The review committee is always excited by innovative new approaches to eliminating hazards. “When those applications come in, we’re so excited because, you know, will it work?” Greco shared. “Maybe it will, maybe it won’t. But we want to help invest in that.”

With every Safety Grant application and award, a network is built. “If it works, we want to be able to take that information and share it with our other policyholders who do similar work or have similar-type businesses, so that they can potentially implement that same solution and benefit from from that new technology that not everybody knew about.”

Policyholders can see how those with similar risks are investing their time and money, and benefit from new solutions and information.

The impact of a Safety Grant

“The main thing that we do post-award is we send our safety and risk consultants out,” Greco said. “It’s typically the same person that the policyholder met with prior to the application. We send them out about six to nine months after the equipment gets put in place and we do a case study.” The goal of the case study is to gather a few different types of information:

  • Return on investment. How much has improved in the months following the grant award?
  • Employee feedback. Are safety improvements impacting their jobs or improving morale around the business?
  • Insight. Would grant recipients recommend the same improvements to others?

“It’s rare, but we have funded things before where the feedback from the policyholder that got it was ‘This didn’t turn out the way we thought’,” she continued. “That’s information we want too, because we don’t want to then recommend that to a similar business.”

The Safety Grant program: An investment for the present and the future

Some employers are hesitant to invest in safety. They’re unsure of the return – how will spending money on safety improvements impact their bottom line? “We’ve seen so many policyholders that have been able to reduce labor costs,” Greco shared. “That’s a huge thing. Reducing labor costs, improving employee morale. And at the end of the day, reducing work comp claims – it is going to have an impact and reduce your work comp premium eventually.”

“It’s kind of wild how much it matters to the employees to see that their employer values them, cares for them, and is willing to invest in their safety and making sure that they get home to their families every night,” Greco said. “The impact of that has just been so profound, and that’s that’s been a really beautiful thing to kind of witness over the last eight plus years.”

At MEM, we believe funding should never stand in the way of keeping people safe. That’s why we created the MEM Safety Grants program. We give first responders the safety resources they need when lives are on the line.

We’re excited to highlight four grant recipients who are using technology to make a difference:

1. Powered Chairs for Patient Handling: Lifting and transferring patients is a significant source of musculoskeletal injuries for healthcare workers. Washington Area Ambulance District used their award to purchase powered chairs for transporting patients. These chairs reduce physical strain on staff and improve patient comfort and dignity.

2. Auto Chest Compression Device: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a vital lifesaving procedure, but manual chest compressions can be tiring and inconsistent. Butler County EMS invested in an auto chest compression device, which delivers precise and consistent compressions, allowing healthcare workers to remain buckled while the vehicle is in motion.

3. Patient Lifts: Similar to powered chairs, patient lifts eliminate the need for manual lifting, preventing injuries and promoting safe patient handling. John Fitzgibbon Memorial Hospital used their funding to purchase additional patient lifts for their facility, ensuring accessibility and safety for all patients.

4. Patient Handling Tools: In an effort to safeguard both patients and medical personnel, the Taney County Ambulance District purchased a Samson strap, alongside Samson backboard handles. These crucial tools are specifically designed to minimize the strain placed on staff members during patient handling procedures.

Investing in safety is not just the right thing to do; it’s also the smart thing. We encourage all healthcare facilities to explore safety grant opportunities and prioritize creating a safe and healthy environment for everyone.

Fire protection districts are the backbone of community safety, from responding to emergencies to conducting fire prevention education. However, ensuring their effectiveness and the safety of their brave firefighters requires constant investment in the latest equipment and resources. That’s where MEM Safety Grants come in, upgrading outdated technology and empowering these vital responders.

This year, we’re showcasing three fire districts that utilized our safety grants to implement innovative solutions that enhance safety and efficiency:

1. Automated Hose Roller

Deploying hoses during a fire can be time-consuming and physically demanding. Fruitland Area Fire Protection District used their grant to purchase an automated hose roller. This technology reduces the risk of injuries and allows firefighters to deploy hoses faster, saving precious seconds in critical situations.

2. Patient Lifts

Firefighters are often called upon to assist individuals with limited mobility in case of fire or other emergencies. Manual lifting can be dangerous for both firefighters and patients. Metro West Fire Protection District used their grant to acquire patient lifts, ensuring a safe and dignified evacuation for everyone.

3. SCBA Filling Station

A self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is vital for firefighter safety in smoke-filled environments, and faulty or poorly maintained filling stations can pose a significant explosion risk. Ebenezer Fire Protection District used their grant to establish a modern, safe SCBA filling station to protect firefighters and equipment.

Beyond the Flames: The Ripple Effect of Safety

The benefits of these fire protection district safety grants extend far beyond the immediate recipients. By investing in the latest technology and equipment, we can:

  • Reduce firefighter injuries and fatalities: Modern equipment minimizes risks and protects responders, enabling them to return home safely after every call.
  • Improve response times and efficiency: Advanced technology allows firefighters to work faster and more effectively, saving lives and minimizing property damage.
  • Boost community confidence and trust: Knowing their fire protection district is well-equipped and prepared fosters peace of mind within the community.

Investing in fire protection district safety is not just about responding to emergencies but preventing them. We encourage all communities to explore fire protection district safety grant opportunities and prioritize equipping their firefighters with the tools they need to keep themselves and their communities safe.

MEM Safety Grant Program

MEM policyholders are eligible for a safety grant, regardless of premium size or claims history. Successful applicants earn one-to-one matching grants of up to $10,000 toward approved safety initiatives. Every day, municipal workers nationwide are on the frontlines, keeping our communities running smoothly. From paving roads to repairing power lines, their dedication ensures our environment is safe and functional. Yet, these acts often expose them to inherent dangers, with motor vehicles and heavy equipment posing constant threats. That’s where MEM Safety Grants come in, acting as critical shields that protect our essential workforce.

We understand the unique safety challenges faced by municipalities. That’s why we offer safety grants designed to empower them with the latest technology and equipment, creating a safer work environment for their employees. These grants translate to lives saved, families protected, and communities thriving.

Shielding lives with smart solutions

This year, we’re shining a light on three municipalities that utilized our safety grants to implement innovative solutions that significantly mitigate potential hazards:

1. Message and radar sign

City of Sedalia used their grant to purchase a combined message and radar sign. This technology alerts drivers to the presence of workers ahead, prompting them to slow down and proceed with caution. This simple tool can drastically reduce the risk of employee fatalities from motor vehicle collisions.

2. Communication headsets

Heavy equipment can be a double-edged sword, essential for tasks and posing the risk of pinning or striking workers. City of Sikeston implemented communication headsets within their crew, enabling clear communication and coordination and preventing incidents.

3. Trench box and shoring equipment

Working in trenches carries inherent cave-ins or electrical hazard risks. Two additional grant recipients – City of Willard and City of Boonville – used their grants to acquire a portable trench box and shoring equipment. These tools provide a physical barrier for employees and offer crucial protection from electrical currents during excavations.

Safer municipalities mean stronger communities

The impact of these municipal safety grants stretches far beyond the direct recipients. By prioritizing employee safety, we can:

  • Minimize employee injuries and fatalities: Fewer incidents translate to healthier, happier families and a reduced financial burden on communities.
  • Boost productivity and efficiency: Employees who feel safe can focus on their jobs without constant fear, leading to higher productivity and project completion speeds.
  • Build a culture of safety: Investing in safety equipment sends a clear message to employees that their well-being is valued, fostering a positive and secure work environment.

Investing in municipal safety grants protects employees and builds stronger, more resilient communities. We encourage all municipalities to explore these grant opportunities and prioritize safety for their essential workforce.

MEM Safety Grant Program

MEM policyholders are eligible for a safety grant, regardless of premium size or claims history. Successful applicants earn one-to-one matching grants of up to $10,000 toward approved safety initiatives. Imagine a city where public works heroes can tackle any trench with confidence, and parks are maintained without risking a slip on a steep slope. The City of Boonville, Missouri, is making that vision a reality thanks to a powerful partnership with the MEM Safety Grant program.

Forget paperwork and red tape – this program empowers communities to prioritize safety for their essential workers. Boonville is a shining example, having received not one but two safety grants that directly translate to a safer, more efficient workforce.

The first grant tackled a common challenge – mowing steep inclines. By acquiring a remote-controlled lawnmower, Boonville’s Parks and Recreation department eliminated the risk of employees working on dangerous slopes, potentially preventing serious injuries.

“The mower changed our way of doing things,” says Paul Linhart, Director of Parks and Recreation. “It saved us from the possibilities of injury for sure.”

But Boonville’s safety journey didn’t stop there. Recognizing the inherent dangers of trench work, the city secured a second MEM Safety Grant to purchase crucial trench safety equipment. This investment not only safeguards public works employees but also streamlines operations.

“We previously had to rent equipment, which can delay the project,” explains Jeff Ditto, Director of Public Works. “The trench equipment purchased with funds from the MEM safety grant allows employees to reduce risk when working below the surface and saves time.”

MEM Senior Safety and Risk Consultant Brad Minor worked with the city to help them identify and apply for grant funds.

“The most unique thing about working with municipalities is the vast array of departments and the various exposures that correspond with each,” said Minor.

Minor said depending on their size, a municipality may have police, fire, water, sewer, parks and recreation, etc., each presenting its unique challenges and risks.

“Anytime we can improve safety for our employees, that’s what we want to do,” Ditto  said. “This has enabled us to do that.”

The MEM Safety Grants program isn’t just about funding. With more than $2.8 million awarded since 2016, the MEM Safety Grant program fosters a safety culture within communities like Boonville, leading to a more productive city for everyone.

Let Safety Grants Change How You Work

All MEM policyholders are eligible for a safety grant, regardless of premium size or claims history. Successful applicants earn one-to-one matching grants of up to $10,000 toward approved safety initiatives. Policyholders monitor claims data and report on the safety grant’s success so MEM can share best practices like this one.

Building four homes in 10 days requires an army of helpers. Ensuring their safety can be a daunting task. For Austin View, executive director of Show-Me Central Habitat for Humanity, this became a pressing concern when Columbia was chosen for a 2023 Blitz Build project. Enter MEM’s Safety Grant Program and senior consultant Brad Minor, who provided crucial support for this ambitious yet safety-conscious endeavor.

With hundreds of volunteers coming together for the Blitz Build, safety was our top priority,” Austin View explained, “Thanks to Brad and the MEM safety grant, we were able to equip everyone with the necessary gear and training, creating a truly safe and successful build experience.”

Show-Me Central Habitat for Humanity joined 58 businesses in benefiting from MEM’s safety grants in 2023, bringing the program’s total impact to more than $2.8 million since 2016. (See full list of winners here

“It’s always rewarding to help policyholders, but with Habitat, it felt extra special,” Brad Minor shared. “They genuinely rely on financial assistance for crucial safety equipment like harnesses and lanyards, things many businesses take for granted.”

MEM’s safety grant also unlocked a productivity boost for Show-Me Central Habitat’s ambitious 143-home project.

“Previously, our work on siding and fascia stalled at 6 feet due to safety limitations,” said View. “Now, thanks to railings and harnesses, we can deploy more workers safely and speed up construction of our 143-home project.

Improving working conditions and safety is just one of the benefits Minor said he enjoys about the safety grant application process.

“Safety grants such as this go beyond protection. They touch lives. Risks addressed, confidence built, morale boosted – all thanks to this investment and the commitment of management to a safer jobsite.”

In the case of Habitat for Humanity, safety is about more than protecting volunteers, but also protecting the American dream.  Habitat for Humanity helps families in need achieve homeownership through affordable mortgages on modestly sized houses. Targeting single-income families with 1-2 children, they empower hardworking individuals who struggle to afford a home on their own.

All MEM policyholders are eligible for a safety grant, regardless of premium size or claims history. Successful applicants earn one-to-one matching grants of up to $10,000 toward approved safety initiatives. Policyholders are required to monitor any claims data and report on the success of the safety grant so MEM can help other businesses learn from their success.

It’s not that heavy. I can lift it myself.

Most of us have been there. Whether it’s a box of holiday decor or a bag of dog food, we’ve all encountered a heavy object that needs to be moved.

It’s probably a two-person job – but you’re the only one around. Determined, you bend over and hoist it up. Then, a familiar twinge in your lower back.

Overexertion accounts for about 20% of all work-related injuries. While these injuries are often less severe than others, they’re common and a real problem in many industries.

Today, tools and technology are available to help employees who do frequent heavy lifting. However, investing in those tools can be challenging for business owners to justify when they have payroll and overhead to worry about.

What does the ROI for heavy lifting equipment look like? Just ask Silas Koonse, owner of Koonse Glass Company.

Safety grant presents an investment opportunity

In 2022, Koonse Glass Company was one of 38 MEM policyholders selected to receive a safety grant. Koonse purchased a SmartLift 608 vacuum lift for handling large, prefabricated glass materials.

“Before the vacuum lift, the team was predominantly manually handling glass panels using suction cups,” explained Brad Minor, Senior Safety and Risk Consultant at MEM.

He continued, “This was necessary when the manufacturer delivered the glass, the team moved it to storage, and when they transported it to a job site. There were multiple points of manual handling throughout the material’s life.”

Each panel averages around 200 pounds – reaching 400-500 pounds at times – putting Koonse employees at frequent risk of a strain or sprain injury.

When Koonse was awarded a $10,000 safety grant toward purchasing the vacuum lift, it solidified that this investment was worth making.

Breaking down Koonse’s return on investment

While most people recover from strains and sprains, these injuries can leave a lasting impact. Research has shown that back pain is one of the leading causes of limited activity and work absence.

A severe back sprain can lead to chronic pain, mental health challenges, and reduced physical activity. The truth is the value of preventing these injuries goes beyond dollars.

At MEM, we believe in the monumental value of investing in safety. So when our consultants work with a policyholder on an investment like Koonse’s, we do an ROI analysis to uncover that value.

Let’s look at Minor’s breakdown of implementation costs, operational and loss avoidance savings, and net ROI for Koonse.

Cost to implement the SmartLift vacuum

Koonse’s investment in the SmartLift vacuum lift was significant. It’s a big decision to purchase equipment costing nearly $40,000. Like most business owners, Koonse could probably list 20 other worthwhile uses for that money off the cuff.

Plus, bringing in new equipment means training employees to use it safely and incorporate it into their processes.

Luckily, Koonse had their safety grant check to help lighten the load – but this was still a substantial up-front investment.

Cost of equipment $39,485
Expenses for employee training over the lifetime of the equipment $3,500
Financial support from MEM Safety Grant ($10,000)
Total cost to implement $32,985

Estimated expected savings over the 5-year lifetime of the equipment

It takes a seasoned leader to look at this type of expense and see the potential long-term savings. What are those savings?

First, implementing the vacuum lift brought a significant productivity boost. Minor established a conservative estimate of 10 hours per week saved across the equipment’s five-year life.

Second, there are the benefits we’re interested in as a work comp carrier: preventing injuries. We assumed the manual handling of glass could cause two strain and sprain injuries over the equipment’s lifetime – again, a conservative estimate.

When a compensable workplace injury occurs, the work comp carrier shoulders most medical and indemnity costs. These incidents also have very real costs to the business, including:

  • Increased insurance premiums
  • OSHA fines
  • Property damage and re-work
  • Lost productivity
  • Replacement employee training costs
Operational savings: Employee time saved (10 hours per week) $65,000
Loss avoidance savings: 2 strain/sprain injuries (direct costs and premium increases) $31,031
Total expected savings $96,031

Return on investment

All things considered, Minor arrived at a return of 191% on Koonse’s investment of around $33,000 – nearly doubling it over five years.

Cost to implement $32,985
Expected savings $96,031
Total ROI for Koonse Glass Company $63,046 = 191%

In case you’re wondering, the ROI is clear for us at MEM, too. We invested the $10,000 safety grant and Minor’s time working with the policyholder to ensure proper implementation of the SmartLift.

For us, preventing one or two (or more!) work comp claims is well worth that investment. That’s what makes stories like these genuinely win-win.

Improved safety and productivity – that’s the idea

Minor revisited Koonse Glass in the Fall of 2023 to see how the lift was working for the team. Koonse reported a great experience so far:

“We recently used it on the Logboat Brewing Company expansion project,” he told Minor. “We offloaded 15 panes of glass weighing 500 pounds each, and the employees noted they weren’t even tired.”

Pleased to hear this, Koonse told the employees, “That’s the idea, guys.”

According to Koonse, employees did have to adjust to the new equipment. At first, they were apprehensive about whether the vacuum would work for the project. (We’d be nervous, too, if we were handling 500-pound glass panes.)

Koonse’s solution was to bring a SmartLift representative on-site to show employees firsthand how to use the equipment. Today, it’s part of their daily operations, and they look for opportunities to use it.

The efficiency boost from using the lift also allowed the team to improve their delivery process. Now, the glass manufacturer delivers materials directly to the job site, eliminating the need for Koonse employees to handle them multiple times and further reducing their exposure to strain and sprain risks.

Increase your ROI with a MEM Safety Grant

If a $30,000+ investment isn’t realistic for your business right now, don’t worry. There are ROI opportunities for safety budgets of all sizes.

All MEM policyholders are eligible to apply for a safety grant to help cover the cost of approved safety initiatives. If awarded a grant, we’ll match every dollar you invest, from $500 to $10,000.

“We see the Safety Grant program as a huge opportunity for our clients,” commented Rich Miller, EVP of Risk Management at TIG Advisors and Koonse’s insurance agent. “It compounds the ROI on a purchase like this to create even more value for the business.”

We’ve been in the business of safety for nearly 30 years. Our Safety and Risk Services team can help you identify where to invest in safety to make the most significant impact on your employees’ lives and your bottom line.

At Missouri Employers Mutual, we’re celebrating seven full years of our Safety Grant program, which provides one-to-one matching funds to selected policyholders to purchase items that improve workplace safety. Since 2016, our grants have totaled more than $2.6 million and helped 354 policyholders invest in safety.

Safety grants save lives and money

The Safety Grant program aims to support policyholders who need safety equipment and demonstrate their commitment to improvement by matching MEM’s investment. Our grant recipients have seen positive results seven years into the program.

Two years before receiving their grants, the 354 recipients experienced 357 claims with almost $9 million in claims related expenses. Since implementing the safety equipment purchased with their grant funds, our award recipients have only experienced 16 claims in the areas addressed by their grant equipment, totaling only $49,000.

Interested in a MEM safety grant?

We’ve got you covered if your business is interested in the Safety Grant program and our experts can help pair your safety goals with grant funds. Before applying, policyholders are required to complete a safety grant consultation with one of our dedicated Safety and Risk Consultants. Our consultant will complete an assessment, help you determine your greatest safety risks, and recommend equipment that best serves your needs. Following the consultation, a safety grant application can be submitted.

To inspire improvements in your workplace, we’re excited to share a list of previously awarded safety grant innovations by industry.

Workers compensation is an important aspect of employee health and safety. It provides support to workers who suffer from work-related injuries or illnesses. However, the cost of work comp can be substantial for employers, especially for small businesses. The best way to reduce premiums and keep costs low is to prevent injuries by improving workplace safety. Many businesses are turning to safety grants, which fund workplace safety initiatives.

What are safety grants?

Safety grants are funds provided by the government or private organizations to businesses looking to improve their workplace safety programs. These grants are designed to help businesses pay for equipment, training, and other safety initiatives that will help prevent work-related injuries and illnesses.

Who qualifies for safety grants?

Typically, safety grants are available to small and medium-sized businesses and non-profit organizations. Some grants may also be available to large companies, depending on the specific grant program and its eligibility requirements.

Types of safety grants

There are several different types of safety grants available, including grants for specific industries, such as construction or manufacturing, and grants for specific safety initiatives, such as fall protection or fire safety. There are also grants available for training programs and for buying safety equipment.

How to apply for safety grants

The application process for safety grants varies depending on the grant program. It generally involves submitting a proposal that outlines your safety initiative and showing why your organization needs funding. You may also need to supply financial information, such as a budget and a business plan, and show how the grant will be used to improve workplace safety.

The benefits of safety grants

The benefits of safety grants are many. They can help companies reduce the cost of work comp, improve the health and safety of employees, and reduce the risk of work-related injuries and illnesses. Safety grants can also help companies to follow OSHA regulations, reduce insurance costs, and improve overall employee morale.

Missouri Employers Mutual Safety Grants

We believe funding should never stand in the way of keeping people safe. That’s why we created the MEM Safety Grant program. MEM policyholders can apply for a grant to buy equipment that enhances safety in the workplace.

Our safety grants supply one-to-one matching funds. That means for every dollar you spend on an approved project, we’ll match it – helping you double your investment on your most important and impactful safety projects.

At Richardet Floor Covering in Perryville, Missouri, the materials needed to install a job may range from several bags of concrete to several pallets. That’s a lot of lifting and potential strain for installers and many trips back and forth to the installation site.

With the purchase of equipment funded partly by the Missouri Employers Mutual Safety Grant program, installers can move quicker and much easier with the Graco Tough Tek Pumping System.

“We are excited about this equipment for many reasons: in time savings and potential injuries, primarily strains,” Erin Sullivan, controller at Richardet Floor Covering said. “Strains and finger cuts are our industry’s most common injury types.”

The new equipment will allow employees to reduce the risk of strain and eliminate extra steps in the self-leveling process of floor installation, allowing workers to avoid hauling water and bags of concrete solution around the job site. Instead, they will use a hose that stretches to where the self-leveler solution (cement mix used to finish the floor) is needed.

The business has an average of 80 employees and primarily serves commercial flooring customers.

Richardet Floor Covering  is one of 38 businesses recently awarded safety grants from MEM. Since introducing the program in 2016, MEM has funded $2.36 million in safety grants, impacting more than 10,000 employees.

Safety grants impact lives

All MEM policyholders are eligible for a safety grant, regardless of premium size or claims history. Successful applicants earn one-to-one matching grants from $500 up to $10,000 toward approved safety initiatives. Policyholders are required to monitor any claims data and report on the success of the safety grant so MEM can help other businesses learn from their success.

Our mission is to bring employees home safe and sound to their families every day, and safety grants deliver on that mission,” Jim Owen, President and CEO of MEM said. “We continually make investments in our policyholders, so the cost of safety initiatives doesn’t get in the way of protecting employees on the job.”

The safety grants program is designed to help policyholders pinpoint areas of their business where employees could be injured: 47 percent of the most recent grants involve equipment targeting strain injuries in the workplace, and 34 percent addressed slips, trips, and falls.
